Scope and Contents
This series consists of letters, postcards, and radiograms from 1926 to 1977 from Ch’en’s friends, family, students, colleagues, publishers, and the Republic of China government, as well as Ch’en’s correspondence drafts. Ch’en kept in contact with Chinese scholars such as Hu Shih, Fu Ssu-nien, Lin Yutang, and Chiang Mon-lin to discuss academic issues, education methods, and contemporary political situations. Ch’en also corresponded with students such as Chu Wen-djang (朱文長) and Laurence (Larry) G. Thompson (譚維理) who asked for Ch’en’s advice on their research. This series also includes H. M. Loh (羅孝明)’s letters studying Su Manshu (蘇曼殊), and C. N. Laird’s correspondence about his life experience at Canton Christian College.

Hu Shih wrote this letter after a meeting with the acting president of the College of Chinese Studies, Dr. John Hayle(?). Hu told Ch'en Shou-yi that Dr. Hayle hopes Ch'en could visit him next Tuesday, and he wants to invite Ch'en to give an academic speech on any topic of Ch'en’s choice, yet preferably about Jesuit missionaries in China.
