General
Equal parts scrapbook and diary, created by a young Pasadena woman in 1944-45 recalling her experiences at a FourSquare church Crusader Camp in the San Bernardino Mountains. The teenager attended Camp Radford located 90 miles east of Los Angeles.
The unnamed young woman kept a daily diary during a week at camp over two subsequent summers. She also listed what she packed for camp, the lyrics to camp songs and choruses, and the names of those who attended from the Pasadena FourSquare church to which she belonged. More than 50 black and white photos, some of the camp buildings, are attached with photo corners to the loose leaf pages.
The Crusader Camp was pioneered at Camp Radford in 1936 by the Reverend Harold Chalfant who was appointed head of the FourSquare Crusader Youth. He was known for his “victory circles” in which hundreds of youth cast pine cones into camp fire flames, symbolizing their surrender to God’s will.
