This series contains research and writing materials pertaining to Garcia’s books “A World of Its Own: Race, Labor, and Citrus in the Making of Greater Los Angeles, 1900-1970" and “From the Jaws of Victory: The Triumph and Tragedy of Cesar Chavez and the Farm Worker Movement.” The series is comprised of correspondence, oral history transcripts, photographs, news clippings, magazines, city planning documents, theses and dissertations, and research notes and bibliographies. The series also includes drafts of articles and conference presentations by Garcia related to topics explored in the two books. These topics include Mexican American communities, citrus labor, urban development and gentrification in greater Los Angeles, the Padua Hills Theater, artist Millard Sheets, residential life and housing, and community activism. Other topics explored are the UFW organization, activities of the members at UFW headquarters and in planned boycotts, and conflicts with political figures and the Teamsters Union. The series contains extensive documentation of the redevelopment of the Arbol Verde neighborhood of Claremont by Claremont Men’s College (now Claremont McKenna) in the 1970s-1980s, as well as personal information and recollections of the UFW in the 1970s.
