Scope and Contents

This series consists of two subseries. The first subseries includes Ch’en Shou-yi’s biographical materials from 1927-1976 such as his personal handwritten diaries, address books and business cards, his daughter’s admission package, immigration documents of his family, letters of appointment from Academia Sinica and the University of Hawaii, and receipts of books from booksellers in China to Ch’en. The second subseries includes materials related to Chinese diplomat and author Hu Shih from 1931-1978. Materials include offprints related to Chinese religion, philosophy, and history; published articles about Chinese events; and newspaper clippings on Hu Shih’s political ideology. This subseries also includes magnetic recording tapes and cassette tapes of Hu Shih’s speeches on Chinese literature and global politics. These tapes include Irene Eber’s signature. Irene Eber (Chinese: 伊愛蓮) was an Israeli Orientalist and wrote a Ph.D. dissertation on Hu Shih in 1965 under the guidance of Ch’en Shou-yi at the Claremont Graduate School.
