Scope and Contents of the Collection

This collection contains articles, clippings, correspondence, and photographs relating to Kathleen Bernath’s life and career, including family photographs and materials relating to her tenure at the Huntington Library. The collection also includes Bernath's correspondence with Allen T. Hazen, including letters and greeting cards, from 1961-1977. Hazen was a Professor of English and Library Service at Columbia University and wrote a bibliography on Horrace Walpole and the Strawberry Press using the Wilmarth S. Lewis Collection on Walpole at Yale University. Additional subjects of collection include: Harris Newmark, Lyle Wright, Mischa Elman, and Vietnam War correspondence.

Biography / Administrative History

Kathleen Bernath was born on November 11, 1910, to Joseph Philip Loeb and Amy Kahn Loeb and was the great-granddaughter of Prussian-American businessman, philanthropist, and historian Harris Newmark. She attended Los Angeles High School and graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles. At age 50, she earned a Masters in Library Science from Columbia University. In 1961, she and her husband Edward Bernath moved to Ontario, California, and Kathleen became the Americana Cataloguer at the Huntington Library, a position she held for 16 years. Following her departure from the Huntington Library, Bernath became the Director of the Upland Public Library. In 1983, she moved to Claremont Manor with her husband and volunteered as Head Librarian of Claremont Manor Library for 14 years. She died on August 31, 2010.

Abstract

Kathleen Bernath, the great-granddaughter of Harris Newmark, was the Americana Cataloguer at the Henry E. Huntington Library for 16 years before serving as Director of the Upland Public Library. She and her husband moved into Claremont Manor and she spent years volunteering as Head Librarian of Claremont Manor Library. This collection contains articles, clippings, correspondence, and photographs relating to Kathleen Bernath’s life and career, including family photographs and materials relating to her tenure at the Huntington Library.
