Scope and Content of the Collection

The materials consist of real estate notebooks, financial statements, family and travel photographs, and travel ephemera collected by Marion Frances Chevalier. The real estate notebooks cover a suburban city outside of Los Angeles, California, known as Pasadena, and its surrounding cities.

Biography/Administrative History

Marion Frances Chevalier (January 21, 1902-February 17, 1990) was a student of the Claremont Colleges and graduated from Pomona College in 1923. Her doctoral work was on the plays of Pousset de Montauban, and she received her Ph.D. in 1933 from Johns Hopkins University. The Marion Frances Chevalier Professorship of French and Comparative Literature at the University of Southern California is named in her honor.

Her parents were Romero R. Chevalier of Ohio and Elizabeth Lee Nelms of Richmond, Kentucky (b. December 25, 1870). They were married in Los Angeles, California, on January 12, 1889.
