Biography/Administrative History

Marie Rankin Clarke was born in 1868 in Afton, Iowa. Her father moved the family to Phoenix, Arizona where she met businessman and successful gold miner Chauncy Clarke. After the two were married in 1894, they purchased land in Arizona then moved to Altadena, California in 1904. During this time they built their estate in Santa Fe Springs, CA where oil was soon discovered. After her husband's death in 1926, Marie Rankin Clarke pursued her interests in education, dance, theater productions, and reading. She founded The Hollywood Bowl. She died childless in 1948, and left most of her estate to The Claremont Colleges.

Abstract

Collection of books, papers, and scrapbooks belonging to Marie Rankin Clarke and Chauncey D. Clark. Items include several reproductions of German religious artwork, a set of the People's Pocket Series books, and a set of travel and tourist guides to Hawaii (1935-1938) and Australia (1938).
