Burton (Robert and Paul Jordan-Smith) Collection
Scope and Contents
The Robert Burton 1577-1640 Collection came to The Libraries of The Claremont Colleges as one of three gifts from Paul Jordan Smith 1895-1971, literary editor of the Los Angeles Times during the 1940s, in memory of his wife, Sarah Bixby Smith 1871-1935. The first six editions of Burton’s Anatomy of Melancholy 1621-1652, the 1927 edition edited by Smith and Floyd Dell, and original editions or contemporary versions of Renaissance Latin authors and others cited by Burton form the bulk of the collection. Early presses represented include Froben, Aldus, and the Elzevirs. Burton’s Anatomy of Melancholy and Burtoniana, a checklist Oxford University Press, 1959, a catalog published by Mr. Smith, describes volumes in the original gift.
