This collection encompasses the years from 1900 to 2009 and provides insight into the George and Isabel Whitney house. This collection contains information regarding the architecture, planning, and life at the house. Other information can also be found in this collection. This includes information about Southern Californian architecture, the history of Upland, California, and surrounding areas, and the growth of the citrus industry in Southern California.

Biography/History

The George and Isabel Whitney house is located in Upland, California. This Mediterranean-style villa was designed by Southern California architect Myron Hunt in the early 1900s. AB Whitney, the father of George Whitney, moved his family to this property in 1916. George and Isabel Whitney were civic servants and highly-regarded members of the Upland community. George Whitney practiced law in Southern California and led the Upland Planning Commission from 1951 to 1963. He also served on the board of Good Samaritan Hospital, the Friends of the Claremont Libraries, the San Antonio Water Company, and the Trona Railway Company. George Whitney died in 2000, and Isabel Whitney died in 2007.

Abstract

The George (1915-2000) and Isabel Whitney (ca. 1915?-2007) House Collection contains materials related to the Whitney House in Upland, California. The Whitneys were some of the first homeowners in Upland and were integral in the civic and community development of the area. George Whitney was also a founding trustee of Pitzer College (1963). The house was designed by the Southern Californian architect, Myron Hunt (1868-1952). The collection consists of correspondence, oral history, pictures, newspaper and magazine articles, and other materials pertaining to the history of the Whitney family and their estate.

Organization and Arrangement

This collection is organized into two boxes. Box 1 contains photographs, manuscripts, and other items related to the Whitney house and the lives of George and Isabel Whitney. Box 2 contains originals of newspapers, magazine articles, and maps of and about the Whitney house; each item is in a separate folder.

Processing Information

Processed by Aaron Bae, 2011. Photocopies accompany all original newspaper and magazine articles in the collection. All photographs, postcards, and maps have been placed in Mylar sleeves. A spacer board was inserted to keep folders upright. One unmarked manila enveloped was removed from the collection, and the items this envelope held were transferred into Folder 1 of Box 1.
