Scope and Contents

Series 1 contains a collection of 75 letters, postcards and a photograph from George Peck to his girlfriend (and later wife), Mary Ridenour during his time with the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) from 1940-1941 stationed in Upland, California and later Metlakatla, Alaska. The correspondence includes letters on several elaborate Alaskan letterheads variously illustrated with maps of the state and pictures of wildlife and illustrations of cabins and people on dogsleds. Series 2 contains 122 pieces of correspondence written to Jeanette Myrle Sander Gustin, 98 of which are from Eugene Gorman, a young member of the CCC. His writings cover his experiences at the CCC camp. Gorman left the camp and he stops writing to Sander as frequently following her 1937 marriage to Donald Sherman Gustin. Correspondence picked up again in 1944 when Gorman was a member of the Naval Construction Battalion in Hawaii and then the Philippines, and contain observations about the service and some on the people of the islands. The other materials include letters, greeting cards, and datebooks from Sander's various family members.
