From the Collection:

The Gay Ann Rogers Collection contains items related to various types of needlework, sewing, and textiles. These materials range in time frame from the 17th through 21st centuries. It includes needlework boxes and cases, needles and related tools, embroidery scissors, tape measures, pincushions, various types of thread containers, darners, antique baby gowns, lacemaking, knitting, and crochet tools, among many other related objects. It also contains many items in five types of Scottish Mauchline ware (transfer ware, tartan ware, fern ware, lacquer ware, and photographic ware) and various textiles created by Gay Ann Rogers herself, as well as some Jane Austen-related memorabilia she collected. Of note are Ellen Browning Scripps' own sewing case, novelty shaped thimbles, and the intricate spool holders.

Physical Description

1) 1790-1800: 3 centimeters; 2) 1840: 2.7 x 1.3 centimeters. 3) 1905: 5.5 x 5.5 cm. 4) 2 pieces, 1900s: 3.7 cm. 5) 1890s, 3.8 cm.

Note

English. Silver filigree emery (1) is fairly heavy for its size; it is double-ended so that its green cushion shows at either end of silver filigree container; Double-ended silver emery (2) with red silk tape and floral decoration on all six sides. (3) is "Emery Bag" in its original box, with painted face of a Japanese woman on one side and painted face of a European man on the other. The English box holding the emery bag is in a Japanese style and appears to be a needlework souvenir commemorating the opera Madama Butterfly. English. (4) is two rose fabirc emeries with silver tops. The larger is covered with glass gold tops of pins. American. (5) is a gold-topped (14k) emery with thread-covered side. American.
