Red roses on a sheer black background with heavier black polka dotted woven pattern; Note on accompanying board in O.P.’s hand: “These were Dr. Mary Faunce’s -my cousin’s aunt by marriage-Mr. Faunce, himself-a famous fabric designer, think some these are his but don’t know which. He is an old, old man now-probably 75 or 80-living in Creede with is daughter who was Mrs. Clayton Wetherill, of Indian guide fame.”; Note by cataloger: Clayton Wetherhill is the brother of those who claimed to have first discovered Cliff Palace at Mesa Verde (although this has been disputed over the years.) Clayton became a scout in the area and has been accredited with conversing with Willa Cather, giving her his brothers account, which she later followed closely in the story line of “On The Professor's House" 32”.
