Scope and Contents

The collection spans much of Lucian Marquis’s life, however most of the material was generated during his post-World War II academic and literary career. Annotated drafts of graduate projects, articles, and short stories are represented, as well as personal and profession correspondence, some dating back to his youth. Though the collection contains a DVD copy of home movies from Marquis’s adolescence, there are few photographs or visual materials herein.

Biographical / Historical

Lucian Marquis was born in Stuttgart, Germany, circa 1921. In the 1930s he and his family fled from the Nazis to Rome, and in 1937 moved to Beverly Hills, California. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Black Mountain College in North Carolina, and joined the Army during World War II, serving in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, Marquis taught in Massachusetts, and earned a master’s degree and doctorate from the University of California, Los Angeles (MA thesis title: “The Social Teachings of the Christian Churches”; dissertation: “The Political Thought of Churches and Sects in the US – 1925-1950”). Marquis taught at the University of Oregon, and began teaching at Pitzer College in 1967. In 1984 Pitzer’s Mead Hall Library was renamed the Marquis Library. Marquis retired in 1991, and died on January 21, 2005.

Abstract

The collection contains documents spanning Lucian Marquis’s life and career, most notably correspondence and manuscript drafts of written works. Collection highlights include handwritten drafts of his thesis and dissertation and materials relating to a 1960s study about Italian workers’ political ideologies in Tarino.
