The Claremont Colleges Special Collections Visual Materials Collection

Abstract

This is an artificial collection created by Special Collections staff to contain the various visual materials purchased or donated that do not fit into other collections. Currently, the collection contains photographs, artist screenprints and photos, posters, historical broadsides, and artifacts. This is a growing collection and new materials will be added as they are acquired.

Scope and Contents

A collection of approximately 70 letters with several accompanying photographs, occasional handwritten illustrations, and postcards from Sergeant Wilfred D. Carnes, an Au Sable Forks, New York native to his family while serving in World War II from 1943 until 1945. The collection also contains correspondence received by Carnes and an application for National Service life insurance.

Abstract The World War II Propaganda collection was acquired by Special Collections of Honnold/Mudd Library. It contains an array of World War II era ephemera. The collection includes broadsides, clippings, maps, pamphlets, and photographs. The collection is made up of a variety of items leading up to, during, and after World War II. Abstract

This collection consists of propaganda posters from both World War I and World War II from the perspective of the Allied powers. While the majority of the posters in this collection are products of the United States government, this collection includes some posters from other countries, Britain and France, and from nongovernmental organizations such as the American Library Association, the Red Cross, the YMCA/YWCA, and private businesses.

Yamano Japanese Internment Collection

Abstract The Yamano Japanese Internment collection contains materials pertaining to the life of Japanese Americans before, during, and after World War II. Many of the materials in the collection document their time in relocation and internment facilities. Sakae and Matsuzo Yamano emigrated from Japan to California in the 1920’s and 1930’s.
