Biography / Administrative History

Frank Wheeler was born in Nottingham, England on December 20, 1856 and came to the United States in 1882. After working in New York City and Chicago as a steamfitter, Wheeler moved to Claremont in 1893 becoming a citrus rancher and realtor. As secretary of the Foothill Boulevard Association, Wheeler played an important role in conceiving and planning for the major thoroughfare, while also helping to connect it with the rest of the highway (U.S. Route 66). In addition to his work locally in Claremont and the Pomona Valley, Wheeler also served as president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce of San Gabriel Valley. His son Stuart Wheeler served as a Claremont city councilmember from 1930 to 1954 and grandson Roger Wheeler helped found Wheeler Steffen Real Estate in 1960.

Processing Information

Through age and many years of use, the scrapbooks have become fragile, particularly the highly acidic pages of newspaper which are brittle and very easily torn. As such, the scrapbooks have been digitized in their entirety and added to the Claremont Colleges Digital Library. This preservation effort was designed to provide online access to the scrapbooks and help limit the handling of the original copies, which are now too delicate for casual browsing.
